Gender is an Important Factor
There is perhaps
no bigger game of risk and calculation than shopping for car insurance quotes
from the nation’s biggest companies.
Using roughly a
century of data about how people drive, where they drive to, and how likely
they are to get a ticket, wear a seat belt, or get into an accident, insurance
companies levy monthly premiums that vary between customers based on gender,
age, and more.
These rates are
often full of discounts, too, for things like safe driving, defensive driving
education, and even good grades.
Amid all of the
discounts given for “good behavior” on the road and in the classroom, there’s
one major discount that most insurers don’t really talk about. That discount is
the one given to female drivers who request an insurance policy.
In virtually
every case, car insurance for women involves lower monthly insurance premiums
than the rates given to male drivers. That even rings true when compared to a
male driver of the same age, income level, and number of years on the road as a
licensed driver.

The reason for
this pretty big gender gap in insurance premium rates is actually pretty
obvious. In study after study, statistical analysis after statistical analysis,
women are proven better at driving and avoiding accidents.
And, because an
insurance company’s rate is largely a risk-based calculation, the lower risk
associated with women drivers grants them access to the best car insurance
premiums available.
In New York, More Pedestrian Deaths are Caused by Male Drivers
In one of the
most unique safety-related studies to take place in the past several decades, a
recent study based in New York City has actually shown that women are better at
driving in urban environments.
The study was
conducted in all five of New York’s boroughs, and every accident was logged in
terms of the driver’s age, the pedestrian’s age, and how those two things line
up.
The study
conclusively showed that, as far as city streets are concerned, it’s bad to be
both a male driver or a male pedestrian.
A stunning 80
percent of all pedestrian-related automobile accidents in the Big Apple were
caused by male drivers of all ages; and, of the people who happened to be hit
by a car while crossing the street, the most common victim was a male under the
age of 64.
In this case, the
study proved that not only do men have a tendency to be unsafe behind the
wheel, but they also have a tendency to be safe in front of it. Insurance
companies quickly took notice, offering cheap car insurance for lady drivers
that soundly beat the prices offered to men.
Men Take More Risks on the Road than Women Do
This might come
as no surprise, especially given the male fascination with sports cars,
roadsters, and testing the limits of speed restrictions, but female drivers
have been shown to shy away from risks on the road more than men.
Of those drivers
with a clean driving record, 68 percent were female. Only 64 percent of male
drivers had a similarly clean record.
When traffic
tickets and moving violations were factored into the study, analysts found that
30 percent of women have between 1 and 3 tickets, while 33 percent of men fall
into the same category.
For extremely
risky drivers, four or more tickets were lodged by only 2 percent of women
drivers; 3 percent of male drivers had four or more violations. Female car
insurance premiums, then, are a direct reflection of their tendency to be far
safer on the road.
Summer is Bad for Male Drivers
While women
drivers tend to remain consistent throughout the year in terms of their
violations, accident claims, and other risky behavior, men actually experience
seasonal fluctuations.
A major study
conducted by Sheilas’ Wheels Insurance Company found that, quite consistently,
men experience a spike in summertime accident-related insurance claim.
In fact, men
increase their accident-related filing by a full 16 percent between May and
September, while women remain relatively consistent between the seasons.
This tendency to
not only remain safe, but to be consistent with driving habits, is another key
reason why many insurance companies offer cheap car insurance for women — even
while they charge men more.
Beyond the Gender Gap: How to Score Low Insurance Rates
The studies
mentioned above are clear indicators that women are doing something right.
Their use of
greater caution on the road, and their tendency to follow the rules of the road
more consistently, have allowed them to get into fewer accidents each year than
their counterparts of the opposite gender.
But, even though
it’s great to note the differences between the genders when discussing
insurance rates, there’s more to the equation than someone’s estrogen or
testosterone levels.
While a key part
of the equation used to calculate the cost of car insurance for women involves
the risk associated with many different types of drivers, competition between
the major insurance companies nationwide is another great way that rates are
lowered.
These companies
are constantly battling for new business, hoping to lure people form the
competition by promising greater discounts, more forgiving policies in case of
an accident.
And a better
overall customer experience as it involves the sales and support staff employed
by the company.
To that end, the
best bet for consumers of both genders is to invoke the use of an online
insurance comparison tool. These convenient tools collect a great deal of
personal information, including driving records and vehicle information, and
then submit it to each of the major insurers nationwide.
That data is then
processed by each insurance company separately, and a quote is returned to the
customer in just a few seconds.
This is where the
real opportunity for savings occurs, for both male and female drivers.
Insurance company quotes can largely be viewed side-by-side, or at least in
rapid succession.
Those quotes list
things like the policy’s deductibles, the percentage of discounts, and any
other special programs a customer qualifies for.
When it comes to
finding the cheapest auto insurance for women, this online tool is really the
icing on the cake.
Already low
insurance rates are further lowered when companies are forced to compete, and
that benefits drivers immensely over the term of their new automobile insurance
policy. (*)
